Upton-to-ICE Custody Transfers

Leaving Upton County Jail on an immigration detainer or warrant can end county custody while federal immigration detention continues. Ask the Sheriff for the actual exit time, release disposition, receiving agency, and destination. The label “released by Upton County” can coexist with “in ICE custody.” When ICE receives the person, “transferred” is the accurate description.

ICE can move detainees between facilities. The detention site may be outside Upton County and outside the immediate region. Search by identity and custodian, not by looking for a local ICE building. Aggregate jail-standard reports cannot identify a person or prove an immigration transfer.

Open the ICE Online Detainee Locator. One search path uses the A-number and country of birth. The biographical path uses the identity fields shown by the live interface. Exact spelling and identifiers matter. Very recent arrivals and some people may not appear immediately.

1. Obtain the full name, country of birth, and A-number if available.
2. Run the identifier search first, then the biographical search if needed.
3. Match the result carefully and note the listed facility or directions.
4. Contact the facility or responsible ERO office when directed.
5. Compare the ICE information with the Upton Sheriff transfer record.

No result is not proof of community release. Data timing, spelling, age, custody category, or a later movement can affect the search. Use ICE's locator help and agency contacts for follow-up.

ICE Custody Contact Route

When ICE Shows No Result

Check spelling, name order, country of birth, and the A-number. Confirm with Upton staff that ICE actually received the person rather than another federal or county authority. A recent handoff may not appear at once, and the locator is not designed as a complete historical discharge archive.

If the Sheriff says USMS received the person, use U.S. Marshals custody and PACER. If the person entered a federal sentence, use the BOP locator. If TDCJ received the person, use the state offender search. These systems cannot be substituted for one another.

Confirm an ICE Release Event

The ICE locator is strongest for current locatable custody. It may not preserve a detailed public history after release or removal. For a past event, retain identifiers, facility information, and dates, then use the appropriate official record channel. A notification or vanished locator result alone does not establish the event type.

The Upton County release search provides the local record path. Pair the Sheriff's actual release or transfer record with ICE confirmation. If the person later leaves ICE custody, describe only what the federal record supports, such as release from ICE detention, transfer, or removal. Do not broaden that statement into a claim about every possible warrant or jurisdiction.

This two-agency check resolves the central question: whether the Rankin custody episode ended in the community or at the door of another custodian. The destination field is as important as the exit time.

ICE Records After Detention

A person may leave ICE detention through release under immigration procedures, transfer, or removal. Those outcomes are not interchangeable. Ask for the event wording, date, and destination supported by the federal record. A county docket cannot supply the later ICE event, just as an ICE locator cannot supply the earlier Rankin release time.

If a locator match later disappears, retain the A-number and former facility information. Contact the responsible official channel rather than assuming community release. The public locator mainly assists with current location, and absence does not create a historical release certificate.

Names can vary between county and immigration records. Compare full identity fields. When Upton identifies ICE as recipient, the A-number or federal reference is the best key for follow-up.
